Calamar Presenter at Legislative Breakfast
(March 9, 2009, Wheatfield, NY) Calamar’s Assistant Director of Senior Services, Samuel Reeder, was an invited guest speaker at the 2009 Legislative Breakfast hosted by The Western New York Cancer Coalition in Cheektowaga today. The program focused on funding for two critical cancer-fighting programs – New York’s Cancer Services Program and Tobacco Control Program.
Calamar was recognized and selected to speak as a result of their voluntary implementation of providing smoke-free apartments in their developments. Calamar is a full-service real estate organization comprised of development, construction, management and finance and investment divisions. Located in Niagara County, Calamar is providing high-quality, affordable senior apartments for age 55 plus in The Woodlands Residential Village, an entity within The Woodlands Corporate Center, as well as in Omaha, Nebraska.
Calamar initially offered buildings that had smoke-free wings which eventually evolved into completely smoke-free buildings. “This was a difficult and challenging decision since we don’t want to alienate anyone. With the help of the Erie-Niagara Tobacco Free Coalition we discovered the advantages of providing a smoke-free environment for all our residents and the residual benefits that such a program would reap, not only for our tenants and their neighbors, but for Calamar as a business”, said Reeder. “The positive response and support we have received since initiating this policy into our senior communities has been overwhelming. We’re very encouraged and excited to offer a healthier, smoke-free home”.
Calamar owns and manages The Woodlands Senior Village, a two story building with 110 one and two bedroom apartments. Forestview Senior Village is a 92-unit one and two bedroom complex currently under construction and is expected to be open by the end of the year.
