Amherst Chamber of CommerceAmherst Chamber of Commerce

I hope everyone had a great summer; it would have been hard not to given the spectacular weather we were able to enjoy.  Let's keep our fingers crossed that our summer weather will continue into the fall.

While the Chamber board did not meet in August, the work of the various committees continued as we inch forward in developing our strategic plan.  I was somewhat relieved to learn that developing a strategic plan is not a process.  We should not be in a rush to get one done, but to get it right.

Along those lines, the work of the Membership, Investor, Products and Services Committee led by board member Mark Gaulin, shared the results of its work over the last several months.  The work of this committee significantly impacts the work of other committees and is critically important to the strategic plan.

The committee reviewed and assessed all of the products and services provided to Chamber members as well as our membership and investor models.  The report was reviewed by the Executive Committee and will be unveiled to the board during our September meeting.  I will provide more details to the membership in next month's First Monday column.

I want to personally thank Mark and his committee for their tremendous work!

There are a number of other important matters that took place over the summer.  Colleen and the staff continue to put together the details for The Event on October 24th where we honor our Business of the Year, individuals, and other businesses.  We are expecting another big crowd so be sure to order your tickets sooner rather than later.

Colleen and I are working closely with the officers from the Emerging Business Leaders in our efforts to continue to more closely integrate our respective boards.  Some of the things we discussed were integrating some of our events so there is more board to board engagement and opportunities to interact.  We are going to continue to meet to discuss this important aspect to our Chamber operations.

I want to congratulate EBL for creating the Emerging Business Leaders Leadership Program.  The program is designed so that participants can "develop personal skills needed to cultivate the professional skills young professionals need to grow into strong leaders within the business community."  I believe the creation of this program will become the foundation for EBL moving forward, especially as we continue to process of integrating both of our boards.

Expect a number of developments to occur during the fall regarding our strategic plan.  I will be sharing this news with you through the coming months.

See you at The Event!
