YMCA Buffalo Niagara opened their doors on January 14, 2013 to their newest and largest branch - The Independent Health Family Branch YMCA. This state-of-the-art 94,000 square-foot facility is located at 150 Tech Drive in Amherst, east of Erie Community College - North.

The new Y is the first facility of this caliber, not only for the YMCA Buffalo Niagara, but for the community as a whole, housing an Independent Health Member Information Center, rehabilitation offices run by Buffalo Rehab Group, and a demonstration kitchen sponsored by Wegmans. Other features include two, 7,700 square-foot gymnasiums, an indoor running/jogging track, fitness center/weight room, two swimming pools (a zero entry warm water pool and a six-lane, 25-yard lap pool), aerobic studios, adventure room, child watch, multi-purpose rooms, locker rooms, and ample parking.

As part of the new branch offerings, Independent Health will also offer health and wellness programming and resources for individuals and families to achieve their fitness goals in a dedicated, multi-purpose space. Attendees do not need to be Independent Health members to access this offering.

Prevention and wellness initiatives are crucial to improve the population's rate of preventable illness and lowering rising health care costs. Up to 75 percent of medical costs are due to chronic conditions, much of which are preventable through better lifestyles choices. The Independent Health programs will engage the community and offer the necessary tools for participants to take personal responsibility for maintain and improving their health.

The new YMCA branch replaced the 26,000 square-foot Northeast Family YMCA Branch (built in 1962), which was located on Main Street in Snyder. Daemen College has purchased the Northeast Family Branch property from the YMCA.
