COMMITTEES AND COUNCILS -

WHY PARTICIPATE?

In many organizations if you join a committee or council the result is you are essentially providing pro bono work for the group.  You are expected to run events, sell tickets and provide marketing assistance.  While this is certainly laudable for philanthropic organizations it is not appropriate for Chambers of Commerce and Trade Associations.

The Amherst Chamber of Commerce created Councils and Committees to provide resources and tangible value for our members - not to use our members as free labor.  Participation in a council offers our members opportunities to meet with their peers in the marketplace, recommend policy to Chamber staff and the Board of Directors and to drive programming and services that benefit the business community.

When you join a council at the Amherst Chamber of Commerce, you become part of a leadership group that drives the activities and actions of the organization.

There are multiple ways you can increase your sense of ownership in the Amherst Chamber of Commerce and have some control over initiative outcomes via participation in a committee or council, including:

BUSINESS RESOURCE COUNCIL

This very active group includes representatives from a diversity of industries in the small business category.  The overall mission of the group is to communicate the specific challenges small businesses face each day and to brainstorm methods to help them overcome those challenges and thrive.

Last year they launched the Small Business Workshop series and have plans for a Career Fair, Co-op Marketing Program and a Small Business Bootcamp for 2011.

PUBLIC AFFAIRS COUNCIL

Public Policy, at all levels of government, impacts our finances and quality of life in a dramatic fashion.  As one of the largest Chambers of Commerce in the state, we have an obligation and opportunity to have our voice be heard.  This group establishes an Annual Legislative Agenda and meets with the appropriate public official to communicate our positions and track issue development and progression.  Whether you are interested in Public Affairs in general or a specific issue, this is a group that can benefit you and your firm.

EMERGING BUSINESS LEADERS

The Emerging Business Leaders (EBL) is a group of young business professionals that has a goal of advancing their leadership potential by empowering both personal and professional growth and success through skill development, leadership training and the building of synergistic relationships.  Regular networking events, skill development forums and CEO Chats are part of the annual programming.
