Reflections On A Tumultuous Year

By Colleen DiPirro/President-CEO

2010 was a year of uncertainty in the marketplace and small businesses felt the impact of a shaking economy profoundly.  While the Buffalo Niagara region did not experience the dramatic highs and lows felt in other parts of the country, we certainly faced the challenge of wondering if we would ever regain our previous prosperity.

The Amherst Chamber of Commerce, recognized that we, as an organization, must adjust our offerings to mirror the changing needs of our members as a result of a turbulent economy and governmental dysfunction.  Consequently, 2010 will be remembered as the year the Chamber rolled out new and creative programs and services.

Member Education Workshops, an initiative of the Business Resource Council, are interactive sessions providing members with the tools they need in a variety of areas to grow their business.  From social networking to crisis media training, these forums are well attended and receiving very favorable reviews.

Emerging Business Leaders kicked off in October when more than 100 business representatives in the Under 40 age demographic networked at Blu Martini.  The EBL plans to host a variety of events throughout 2011 including networking events and interactive workshops along with a private breakfast, lunch or dinner with a regional CEO. For more information on the Emerging Business Leaders initiative, click here.

Business After Hours Hosted by a Public Official put a new twist on our monthly networking events.  Attendance averages well over 100 members at each of these programs and provides our members with an up close and personal opportunity to meet and talk with a local elected official. This past year, County Executive Chris Collins, NYS Senator Mike Ranzenhofer, Town Supervisor Barry Weinstein, Town Board Members Barb Nuchereno, Mark Manna and Guy Marlette and County Legislator Ray Walter have served as Honorary Hosts.

Electronic Communications have become our preferred method for communicating with our members in 2010.  We can provide you with real time information in a cost effective manner.  Our monthly First Monday has received rave reviews and our Healthcare Corner has been well received by our health insurance subscribers.  Many of you follow us on Facebook and use of our website continues to grow.
