Public Policy-Why Should We Care?

The Amherst Chamber of Commerce staff devotes more time engaged in public policy issues these days than it has anytime in its 43 year existence.  This is not because we have changed our focus; it is because public policy is shaping our life and our futures more than anytime in modern history.  We only need to look at the state budget fiasco to realize that we can no longer abdicate our leadership responsibility to those public officials we have empowered to act on our behalf.

Because of recent shifts in power, giving downstate much more representation than our region, decisions are being made without considering the impact on Buffalo Niagara.  While our local delegation makes sure our point of view is heard, they are not having any impact because of the geographic imbalance of power.  On the local level, we realize that we must start behaving as a region to remain globally competitive.

Additionally, because we have grown to be one of the largest Chambers of Commerce in the state with over 2,000 members, our opinion is sought on a diversity of issues.  We have clout and we want to make sure we use it for the benefit of the business community we represent.  Therefore, our Public Affairs Council has taken more responsibility. They meet monthly for the purpose of vetting issues, prioritizing the importance of specific initiatives and mobilizing dialogue with the appropriate public official or governmental agency.

These actions are critically important to our regions prosperity and the livelihood and quality of life of both our members and the residents of the Buffalo Niagara region.  To insure that we mobilize action and truly represent the position of the maximum number of stakeholders, we invite you to participate in our council and/or sign up for our Public Policy electronic newsletter and briefings which we will launch right after Labor Day.

The Amherst Chamber of Commerce has a full time, professional staff.  We will do the research and prepare documents with all the data necessary for you to respond relative to your position.  But, we need your input and your support.  A Call for Action has much more relevance when 1,000 responses are received by our public officials than one letter from us, representing many thousands.  So please understand the value of our engagement to you and your future and join our efforts.  Email ccampbell@amherst.org for council times or additional information.
